    Gum Disease in Women

Too bad there wasn’t an instruction manual that came the day a woman was born. Women have special needs, we all know that, but did you know that these special needs include extra care in the dental hygiene in certain times of the month? Hormone fluctuations can be one of the reasons why your gums are bleeding when you brush. Pregnancy and menstruation gingivitis is pretty common and needs to receive extra care to prevent tooth loss and or infections.

If you brushed and noticed your gums bleeding it may be an early sign of gingivitis. Periodontal disease is the inflammation of the gums located around the tooth. You may feel the gums swollen, red, discomfort and they bleed with the slightest touch. This is a result of not flossing and brushing enough. Plaque builds around your tooth due to bacteria, rotting food particles, and mucus. If not brushed off daily then the plaque becomes hard and the only thing that can take it off is the dentist. When the plaque builds up it causes the gums to become irritated and may cause infection. This infection can cause pus to build up in between the gum and teeth making it a very painful infection which may lead to tooth loss. Women have a higher risk of gingivitis and periodontal disease because of their unique genetic makeup.

A few upgrades in your dental hygiene can save you all the pain and discomfort from gum disease. Adopt these few habits and you can maintain your beautiful white smile without spending loads of money. Floss daily and brush your teeth at least 2 times a day. Flossing is very important. Any food particles stuck in between your teeth can not be removed by just brushing. Baking soda with a little water is the best toothpaste for your teeth. Throw out your mouth wash, all you need to do is gargle hydrogen peroxide. Eating fruits and vegetable along with nuts exercises your gums. Massaging your gums daily is beneficial. It helps circulate blood and reduces any swelling.

About a week before or after menstruation a woman may experience increased sensitivity in her teeth and/or increased bleeding from gums. It’s important to increase flossing, brushing and peroxide rinses during this time. Teens in puberty also need to adopt a good hygiene plan. Their hormones are elevated during this time and are sensitive to irritants which will lessen once she matures. Pre-menopausal and menopausal women are also susceptible to irritants. They may feel dry mouth, pain and burning sensations due to the fluctuations in hormones and need to stay on top of their oral care. Estrogen tablets usually help with these symptoms.
