    Women and the Thyroid

    Jun 26, 2022 |
Although thyroid disorders do not discriminate on whom they choose to take down, women more than men are more likely to be affected by a thyroid disorder. Most disorders if not all, can be completely prevented. A person’s life style and level of cholesterol can be the very things that trigger the disorder.   The thyroid is a gland that’s located in the throat right before hitting the voice box. Women are five to eight times more likely to have a disorder. The symptoms can easily be confused with other conditions so they are over looked many times. Following childbirth, women are at high risk of developing a thyroid disorder. Post-partum depression has the same symptoms as a thyroid disease and can often be confused. Feelings like fatigue and depression are common.   The gland at the base of your neck before the voice box is the thyroid. It is butterfly shaped and you can feel it easily with you hand. The thyroid produces the thyroid hormone, also known as the metabolic hormone. It’s responsible for regulating tissue growth, maintains blood pressure and develops tissue for the skeletal and nervous system. The reproductive system also depends on the thyroid for development. Hypo-thyroidism is a condition known as an under-active thyroid. The gland releases too little of the hormone. The second condition is known as hyperthyroidism where the thyroid produces too much of the hormone.     Hypothyroidism can show symptoms of fatigue, weight gain, slow heart rate, poor memory, dry skin, puffy fingers and face, lack of smell or taste, and trouble concentrating. Hyperthyroidism can show symptoms of irritability, shorter menstrual period, frequent bowel movements, weakness, trembling, and enlarged thyroid gland. Some of these enlarged glands can be cancerous so it’s important to keep an eye on it and to have a doctor check it out. Nodules can vary in size and they’re not always cancerous. They do though show signs of some kind of thyroid complication. Most nodules show no signs or symptoms of a disorder. They also go undetected. Other nodules however can cause difficulty swallowing and coughing. They can also cause the thyroid to become overactive that is causing hyperthyroidism.   Exercise, eating well and resting can balance your body and align it so that all of your glands and organs work as they should. Some herbs can help along with a healthy lifestyle. Ginger is said to be a great anti-inflammatory. Any herb or root that detoxifies is great to take. Dandelion is known as a blood purifier and will be sure to clean any impurities that may be causing some congestion with you glands. Research and see which one is best for you and your needs.   ...

Vegetarian Diets Can Be Unhealthy for You

    Jun 26, 2022 |
People who do not eat meat are quickly starting to become a subculture. The “to eat meat or not to eat meat” debate is starting to look a lot like the smoker vs. nonsmoker debate. People’s passion for their cause is the reason for the controversy, just as it is with every other big cause that separates huge numbers of people.   Not all vegetarians are created equally. Some people refuse to eat meat because they like to communicate with animals, and be as one with them, rather than grill them. For other people it’s a matter of health; their belief being that humans were never intended to consume meat in the first place. To these people, eating meat is the equivalent of poisoning their own bodies. There are also the environmentalists who believe that eating animals, indirectly, as well as directly, destroys the earth; but they reserve the right to incorporate all of the above reasons into their decision without further notice.   Non-vegetarians have their own set of undeniable compelling reasons for enjoying meat, and do so with gusto. Whatever side of the debate you happen to fall on, one thing remains true, your body needs the same nutrition whether you eat meat or not. Just because your mind or heart dictates to you that you not partake in steak, your body still has the same nutritional needs and will not thrive without those needs being met.   Statistically speaking, most vegetarians are less likely to be obese than their meet eating peers. But it is a well known fact that a person’s weight is not a conclusive way to determine their overall health.     Vegetarians and non-vegetarians need to eat responsibly. It’s not just about what you don’t eat, but rather more about what you do put into your body. The number one goal should be giving your body the fuel it needs to keep all of its systems running at their peak performance. One of the biggest mistakes the non-meat eaters make is not getting enough protein and essential vitamins; the second is substituting the food they are not eating with processed foods that are full of empty and unhealthy calories.   A person who is determined to cut meat and dairy out their diets really needs to become very educated about how they can get the protein and vitamins they are missing out on. Unless they are vigilant about eating a wide variety of healthy foods, they will most likely need to take vitamin supplements to achieve optimal health. But it is important to note that the body does not benefit quite as well from vitamins as it does from a healthy diet. They also need to be very careful not to get caught up in thinking that since they are not eating meat, they can pig out on everything and anything else, or they could end up looking like one of the animals they stopped eating.   ...

    Gum Disease in Women

    Jun 26, 2022 |
Too bad there wasn’t an instruction manual that came the day a woman was born. Women have special needs, we all know that, but did you know that these special needs include extra care in the dental hygiene in certain times of the month? Hormone fluctuations can be one of the reasons why your gums are bleeding when you brush. Pregnancy and menstruation gingivitis is pretty common and needs to receive extra care to prevent tooth loss and or infections.   If you brushed and noticed your gums bleeding it may be an early sign of gingivitis. Periodontal disease is the inflammation of the gums located around the tooth. You may feel the gums swollen, red, discomfort and they bleed with the slightest touch. This is a result of not flossing and brushing enough. Plaque builds around your tooth due to bacteria, rotting food particles, and mucus. If not brushed off daily then the plaque becomes hard and the only thing that can take it off is the dentist. When the plaque builds up it causes the gums to become irritated and may cause infection. This infection can cause pus to build up in between the gum and teeth making it a very painful infection which may lead to tooth loss. Women have a higher risk of gingivitis and periodontal disease because of their unique genetic makeup.   A few upgrades in your dental hygiene can save you all the pain and discomfort from gum disease. Adopt these few habits and you can maintain your beautiful white smile without spending loads of money. Floss daily and brush your teeth at least 2 times a day. Flossing is very important. Any food particles stuck in between your teeth can not be removed by just brushing. Baking soda with a little water is the best toothpaste for your teeth. Throw out your mouth wash, all you need to do is gargle hydrogen peroxide. Eating fruits and vegetable along with nuts exercises your gums. Massaging your gums daily is beneficial. It helps circulate blood and reduces any swelling.     About a week before or after menstruation a woman may experience increased sensitivity in her teeth and/or increased bleeding from gums. It’s important to increase flossing, brushing and peroxide rinses during this time. Teens in puberty also need to adopt a good hygiene plan. Their hormones are elevated during this time and are sensitive to irritants which will lessen once she matures. Pre-menopausal and menopausal women are also susceptible to irritants. They may feel dry mouth, pain and burning sensations due to the fluctuations in hormones and need to stay on top of their oral care. Estrogen tablets usually help with these symptoms.   ...

What Does Middle Age Mean for Your Health?

    Jun 26, 2022 |
From the time we are kids, to the time we are well into our thirties, our health is something we take for granted. The lack of thought and concern that we show to something this important comes from abundance of good health, and our lack of experience in having anything but. As children and young adults we jump, bounce and crash into life with the complete and total belief that nothing can ever stop us.   Living like there is always a tomorrow is not all bad; life is an adventure meant to be enjoyed. But if we don’t prepare ourselves for how our bodies will change as we grow older, then we are in for a rude awakening. There is no rule that says that we have to stop enjoying life once we hit a certain age. It’s actually quite the contrary; many people are now realizing that life gets better as one becomes more enlightened and experienced.   Bettering your odds of remaining healthy as you head into middle age is as simple as deciding which parts of your body and mind you would like to keep, and then taking care of them so you can. Anything will go to waste if it’s neglected long enough, even you. Do not waste your time taking the attitude that, by taking care of yourself, you are not growing old gracefully. There is nothing graceful about not being at your best, whatever your age is.   Most of what people believe about aging originates from fear. In this era where information reigns, it’s time to dispel the fear and replace it with facts:   You are not destined to gain several pounds every year after forty; your metabolism has not gone into retirement. Your metabolism will only slow if you do not stay active. If you were never active before, this is a good time to start. You can end up in better shape than you ever could have imagined.     You will not lose your sex drive as you get older; the truth is, use it or lose it. It’s all up to you to keep the fires in your loins stoked. Besides, if this were true, why would there be geriatric porn?   Your skin and hair can be absolutely brilliant at any age. Drinking plenty of water and eating vitamin rich foods every day will make you shine and glow. Even twenty year olds get wrinkled skin and dull hair if they don’t drink enough water.   Mentally you are superior. This is the best time in your intellectual life. The knowledge you have accumulated is the bridge to higher levels of consciousness and pure enlightenment.   Getting to the point in life where so much of what used to be confusing, is now making sense, is very freeing. You are now free to do the things that make you feel good and be healthier, without worrying about what others will think. You are old enough to confidently make good decisions about what you eat and how much you sleep. You do not let fear stand in the way of getting yourself to the doctor for your annual checkups. Most importantly you have the knowledge to be the master of yourself and the discipline to do it well.   ...

    Stay Fit Anywhere

    Jun 26, 2022 |
Joining a fitness club or weight training gym can be a truly effective way to really motivate yourself to follow through with your intention to get fit and stay fit. The key to this being really useful is to actually show up, since once you are there you are most likely either going to be working out or timidly pacing around the locker room wondering why you are there. Unless, of course, the locker room itself is the main obstacle impeding your desire to get to the workout area at all. In any case, it is likely that you will actually be exercising once you are at the gym all suited up and ready to do some training.   A great motivating factor for getting you to the gym at all is the fact that you are possibly paying monthly or annual membership fees and the thought of not utilizing that financial investment to the fullest is something that keeps you going to the gym on a regular basis. For many people it actually isn’t so expensive and a gym membership can often end up being a way to act like they are going to get fit rather than actually doing it. A wide array of excuses is possible when it comes to fitness clubs, such as the distance to the club being too far or the workout clothes being in the laundry. Wouldn’t it be great if you could just workout pretty much anywhere and would have no real excuse for not doing something to get or stay fit?   A more optimal alternative that may require some actual personal motivation, yet has no fees and requires no travel time, as well as not needing to be subjected to the locker room of a fitness club on a regular basis, is something known as bodyweight training. This is a category of fitness that you are likely already familiar with and have probably practiced quite a bit in your life. Actually whenever you move your body you are essentially doing bodyweight exercise. It involves using only the weight of the human body as resistance to tone itself by lifting itself. There are many popular exercises based on this principle such as push-ups, sit-ups, chin-ups, pull-ups, and so on. There are also a lot of specifically developed training exercises which have been designed to target smaller muscle groups.     There are many such exercises being developed and most require no equipment at all to do, while some may require a simple bar. You can either find a bar somewhere in your house that is about one head above your height to facilitate chin-ups and pull-ups and similar exercises. Make sure it is definitely sturdy enough to easily hold your weight before you attempt to do any exercises. If no bar is readily available in your home or another convenient location already then you can install one for the purpose. There are actually kits available at many department stores and sports stores for installing a bar into a doorway.   Hopefully this will get you motivated to get some really good exercise anywhere you find convenient and without needing to spend extra on a fitness club.   ...
